Study Discovers Harmful Health Effects of Uric Acid & Chlorine
The results are in: Uric acid and chlorine are harmful to swimmer’s health, according to a new study published in the American Chemical Society’s journal Environmental Science & Technology. For those who aren’t familiar, uric acid is found in both urine and sweat, and once uric acid and chlorine combine in the pool, you may want to exit the water.
In the study, researchers mixed uric acid with chlorine and within one hour they found trichloramine and cyanogen chloride had formed. These two chemicals are commonly found in traditional chlorinated pools. They’re so common that Ernest Blatchley III, one of the study’s researchers, said that these two chemicals have been present in almost every sample they’ve taken from a chlorinated pool over a period of nearly 10 years.
